Chess*
Note for MacOS with M chip user:
If you're playing on itch.io, shader will appear glitched. This is due to Apple poor support for WebGL player when the project is built with Unity URP. The game will still work fine though.
Please download the MacOS build for better experience and performance (which will be added later, building games for Mac when you only have a Windows laptop is hard)
Chess*
*with attach mechanics
Chess* is a collaboration project between me and myself. Chess* brings in a new mechanics to chess: attachment - allowing 2 piece to occupy the same square and move as one.
If you encounter a bug or have some cool suggestions, do leave a comment. I'd love to hear what you have in store. 👌
How it works
Move a piece onto another piece of the same team to attach. The higher value piece will then be able to carry the other piece to move around the board as one unit.
At anytime, pieces can detach by moving away individually. This allows more piece synergies and add another layer of strategy to chess.
There are no limit to how many piece you can attach, go wild.
Rules
To balance the game, making it playable. 💀
- Attaching and detaching both takes 1 turn to perform.
- The higher valued piece will always be the one carry the other. This means when moving both piece, only the carrier movement applies. The order is as follow:
Queen
Rook
Knight & Bishop
Pawn
King (can be attached to every piece)
- Pieces of the same value cannot be attached (Pawn & Pawn, Rook & Rook, Bishop & Knight, etc.).
- Capturing an attached unit will kill both pieces. High risk, high reward.
- 2 pieces at a time, don't try attaching 3 pieces together. Although if you ask nicely I might make it happen.
Piece Specific Rules:
- Attaching counts as a move for both piece. Pieces that rely on the first-move basis will not be able to perform corresponding actions. This includes Pawn's Double Move and King/Rook's Castling.
- King cannot attach to new piece if under checked. King can still be detached if he is attached.
- Pawn cannot be promoted while being attached.
Wild Mode Alterations
Wild Mode is an option for those who wanna push the limit of the mechanics and create chaotic gameplay that is impossible to finish.
- All pieces can attach to any piece. No constraints.
- No more carrier, any piece can be the carrier of an attached unit.
- King can attach regardless of whether he's in check.
- Pawn is allowed to promote while being attached.
Try it yourself
This mechanic is simple enough for you to try out with a physical Chess game set. Just squeeze 2 pieces into a single square if you can get over the weird placement.
Stuff to add
Probably. If people request it then I'll do it. Or I might as well jump to another project (check out my other stuff).
- CPU integration.
- Online play.
- Non-URP build for MacOS users playing the web.
